On November 7, 2023, the International Trade Commission (ITC) officially held a hearing on Thailand's dual anti tire trade, marking the beginning of a new round of global tire trade war!
This hearing, on the surface, is an anti-dumping investigation against Thai truck and bus tires. In fact, the real goal of the US tire market is Chinese companies that establish production capacity in Thailand. The United States Federation of Steel Workers (USW) directly pointed out in the investigation petition that the "driving force" behind the increase in Thai tire shipments to the United States is Chinese tire companies - at least five large Chinese tire companies have commercial tire production capacity in Thailand, and they are "detouring" to export Chinese tires to the United States!
In fact, this is not the first time the United States has conducted a dual anti tire investigation into Thai tires. But it can be certain that the true goal of every implementation of dual countermeasures is Chinese tire companies. After all, since 2009, the "thorn in the flesh" of the US tire market has always been Chinese tire products.
In 2009, a shocking "tire special protection case" occurred - the United States implemented a three-year tariff restriction on Chinese passenger car tires and light truck tires: an additional 35% tariff was imposed in the first year; Add a 30% tariff in the second year; An additional 25% tariff will be imposed in the third year.
The result of this double reaction is obvious, with a sharp drop in Chinese tire shipments to the United States and a significant drop in export value. In 2010, the number of tires exported to the United States decreased from 14 million in the previous year to 10 million. In the following five years, the proportion of China's exports to the United States has decreased to 36%; With the decline in sales, the amount of tire exports to the United States has also begun to plummet, with a total of 2.1 billion US dollars in related products exported from China to the United States in 2013.
According to statistical data from the US tire market, Thai tire shipments to the US are rapidly catching up with Mexican tires. In 2022, the export value of Mexican tires to the United States increased by 56.7%, although it is still less than the export value of Thai tires. However, the exaggerated year-on-year increase still puts considerable pressure on tire companies. Even local American companies are feeling the challenge from South American tires.
